Roger Gracie is a heavyweight Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and is the son of Mauricio Motta Gomes and Reyla Gracie. He now runs the Gracie Barra Academy in London, England, where he trains with Braulio Estima and Jude Samuel.
Roger Gracie is one of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitors in the world. He is known for submitting high-level opponents with the most basic of BJJ moves, like armbars from the guard, gi chokes from the mount, and and gi chokes after taking his opponent's back.
Some BJJ tournament highlights:
- In 2007 Roger Gracie won both the open weight division and super heavyweight division at the Brazilian jiu-jitsu World Championships in California.
- In 2006 he came in second place in the open weight division and won the absolute division.
- In 2005 he fought Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in the open weight division and actually broke Jacare's arm. However Jacare did not tap and went on to win as he was ahead on points. Roger Gracie won the super heavyweight division that year as well.
Gracie entered mixed martial arts fighting in a Bodog Fight match against Ron Waterman, which he won by armbar early in the first round.
