Matt Serra is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Though his professional MMA career began in 1999, he has been fighting in the UFC since UFC 31-Locked & Loaded in 2001.
Serra was a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback. His outgoing personality lead to his becoming the leader of his group of fighters on the show.
Serra's grappling skills earned him an invitation to the prestigious Abu Dhabi Combat Club championships. During this performance he submitted the dangerous Takanori Gomi with a rear naked choke.
In 2007 at UFC 69 he defeated George St. Pierre to become the UFC welterweight champion.
