Matt Hughes is an American mixed martial arts fighter from Iowa. He has had numerous MMA fights now considered to be classic UFC encounters, including his run-ins with BJ Penn, Georges St. Pierre, and Frank Trigg.
On television, he was the coach of The Ultimate Fighter Season two. In that season his team was pitted against the team of Rich Franklin. Hughes also served as a coach on Season 6 opposite Matt Serra. Like other reality television series based the encounters between people of different backgrounds, the interaction from Hughes, of a rural background, and that of Serra, who is from Long Island New York, was eventful.
In the autumn of 2007 Matt Hughes announced that he was amicably parting ways with his long-time trainer and coach Pat Miletich to start his own training facility alongside fellow MMA fighter Robbie Lawler.
Matt Hughes is a devout Christian and comes from a farming family. He has a twin brother Mark Hughes who once competed in mixed martial arts and now appears to focus on the work of the family farm.
