Jorge Gurgel was born in Fortaleza, Brazil, and is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Gurgel immigrated to the United States, where he launched a series of successful BJJ schools, mostly in the midwest. He is a close friend of Rich Franklin, and often helps coach Franklin during his MMA fights.
Gurgel was a contestant on season two of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV. One of the more entertaining contestants on the show, he was eliminated in the fifth episode. Gurgel has claimed that he entered the show with a torn ligament in his knee, and told no one so that he could still compete for the title.
