Raised in a secluded area of the mountainous Sierra Nevada Mountains of northern California, Jake Shields is a life-long vegetarian.
Shields has extensive grappling experience, having wrestled at San Francisco State, and won championships at Grapplers Quest and the Pan-Ams of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He has even competed in the prestigious Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) submission grappling competition, and grappled against Marcelo Garcia at the Professional Submission League's X-Mission in late 2006.
Shields began his MMA training in 1999 by joining Chuck Liddell's SLO Kickboxing Academy. In 2001 Jake decided he wanted to make a career of mixed martial arts and began fighting at his natural weight of 170 lbs. He has consistently fought top ranked and highly regarded opposition. Shields has a very strong record, including a win over the very tough Japanese fighter Hayato Sakurai.
His close relationship with fellow Cesar Gracie teammate Gilbert Melendez is widely known. Jake Shields is managed by his father Jack Shields, and it was announced in November 2007 that Jake Shields had re-signed with ProElite to a "long term deal". Specific terms and length of the fighter's agreement were not disclosed.
On February 26th, 2008 Jake Shields received his black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu from Cesar Gracie.
