Dean Lister was raised in a military family, and lived a considerable amount of time in Latin America and as a result Lister speaks fluent Spanish. Being different in a foreign land, Lister claims it was not hard to become the target of bullies, and he began learning to fight to protect himself.
In San Diego, Dean Lister studied Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Fabio Santos. Around the same time he earned his black belt, and delivered a spectacular performance at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club championships, in which he beat Nate Marquardt, Saulo Ribeiro, and Marcio 'Pe De Pano' Cruz, Lister struck out on his own and began pursuing a mixed martial arts career. Dean Lister once held the King of the Cage middleweight belt.
