Though born in Kaoshiung, Taiwan, Wang's family relocated to Los Angeles when he was a baby. Wang attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa and went on to teach high school history and government classes in the Los Angeles area.
Wang's background in the combat sports is mostly in grappling, having trained with the Machado brothers, Relson Gracie, and Baret Yoshida. He was inspired to become an MMA fighter after seeing UFC on videotape in 1995.
After recently competing in the Professional Submission League, he appeared as a contestant on Season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter on SpikeTV. He lost in a fight after not listening to his coach BJ Penn, who advised Wang to take the fight to the ground and take advantage of his superior grappling skills.
Wang is also currently the head instructor of the Taipei Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy.
